Mid-Century WOW

The homeowners sought to restore and modernize their neglected mid-century modern home while addressing critical functional and aesthetic issues. Their primary goals included creating an inviting front seating area featuring a fire pit that would also reflect the home’s architectural style. Additionally, they needed a solution to the severe drainage issues caused by a driveway that sloped toward the house, leading to significant water damage, rot, and mold problems. The design had to seamlessly integrate these functional improvements with the home’s mid-century charm.

BEFORE: View of space before installation began.

AFTER: View of project from top of driveway, with the house entrance in the background.

AFTER: View of transition from driveway to house entrance. Concrete was used as the main hardscape material for this space, and complemented with slate chips.

AFTER: While concrete is the principal material in this hardscape there are other materials mixed in to give interesting contrasts in color and texture: stucco, Jatoba wood, corten steel and slate ships. The result is a modern, minimalist look that complements the mid-century modern house perfectly.

AFTER: View of hardscape with adjacent retaining walls and lawn, which channel stormwater away from the patio and house to control drainage. The modern concrete fire pit has a gas insert for full convenience. The Jatoba wood screen installed along the driveway provides some privacy and complements the Jatoba bench.

AFTER: The custom-built Jatoba bench is integrated into the retaining wall and supported with iron brackets to create a modern 'floating' effect.
