UAC April Topiary Courtyard:  What did you miss?

The UAC April Networking and Education dinner at Topiary Courtyard brought together industry professionals to address evolving landscape design challenges.

The presentation, "Resilient by Design: Engineering the Future of Water-Wise Landscapes,”  was followed by a panel discussion with three distinguished experts: Dr. Heather Kirk-Ballard, Assistant Professor of Sustainable Urban Landscape; Brandy Hall, Owner of Shades of Green Permaculture; and Pam Dooley, Owner of Plants Creative Landscapes.

The discussion focused on the need for landscape professionals - designers, growers, maintenance contractors, and educators, to consider adapting some traditional practices that are proving inadequate against fluctuating patterns of flash droughts and heavy rainfall.

The expert consensus centered on reimagining water management: moving away from conventional drainage approaches toward designing landscapes that function as "living sponges." This innovative approach promotes strategies that combine beauty, functionality, and sustainability. Attendees gained practical insights into water-wise techniques while networking with fellow professionals committed to building more durable horticultural practices that can maintain quality design standards while adapting to changing conditions.
