Sculpting a Sanctuary from the Overgrowth
The Eppsteiner Project in Marietta began as a backyard lost to time, characterized by dense overgrowth, failing structures, and steep, wooded terrain that made the space virtually unusable. Homeowners David and Cheryl Eppsteiner envisioned a complete reclamation of the land, seeking to transform the "wilderness" into a structured, multi-functional outdoor living environment. Their goal was to create distinct zones for recreation, gardening, and elevated dining, all while navigating the property’s dramatic elevation changes.
To realize this vision, designer Alexandre Badila and the team at Blue Fossil Group "sculpted" the challenging topography into three intentional, terraced levels. This required extensive site preparation, including massive tree removal and precision grading to move significant amounts of earth. The result is a vertical journey through the landscape: an upper-level flagstone patio for elevated dining, a sun-drenched mid-level garden terrace featuring custom raised wooden beds, and a spacious lower lawn perfectly suited for recreation.
Ensuring the three tiers felt like a single, cohesive sanctuary required expert masonry and a consistent material palette of natural stone, gravel, and wood. Hand-stacked natural stone retaining walls provide the necessary structural integrity and a high-end aesthetic anchor for the lower level. Integrated stone stairs and flagstone pathways now provide a natural, intuitive flow from the house to the forest border, successfully turning a topographical hurdle into the defining architectural feature of the property.
